Synopsis

Erin is just ten years old when we meet her, growing up in a village where massive war-lizards called Touda are bred, watching her mother work as the head doctor for these fearsome creatures. Her mom, Soyon, belongs to the Mist People — green-haired, green-eyed, and distrusted by everyone around them despite Soyon being the best at what she does. Erin idolizes her mother and wants to become a beastinarian herself, spending her days studying these dangerous creatures with wide-eyed fascination. It starts gentle, almost slice-of-life, focused on this warm mother-daughter bond. But the world around them — a kingdom held together by fragile political alliances and armies built on controlling beasts — doesn't stay quiet for long. This 10-episode TV special is a condensed version of the original 50-episode series, hitting all the major beats without the slower stretches. The core of the story is Erin's evolving relationship with animals and the ethical weight of how humans use them, wrapped inside a richly built fantasy world with real political stakes. The soundtrack does a lot of heavy lifting emotionally — it knows exactly when to be quiet and when to wreck you. If you liked Seirei no Moribito's grounded fantasy storytelling or the tender human-creature bond in Somali and the Forest Spirit, this sits right in that space. It's patient, it's earnest, and it earns every emotional moment it asks you to sit with. Produced by Production I.G and Trans Arts, adapted from a novel — the source material shows in how layered everything feels.
