Haré+Guu Deluxe
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Apparently, just one normal day is too much to ask for Haré. That's never happening. His mother Weda is a perpetually drunk disaster, and Guu — the strange girl who lives with them — is something between a person and a cosmic anomaly who swallows people whole and somehow contains an entire dimension inside her stomach. If you survived the original series and thought 'surely it calms down after this,' the Deluxe OVA has six episodes that prove otherwise. Back from the city, Haré now has to contend with a substitute teacher who has a volcanic temper and an unsettling fixation on him, plus the bombshell that Weda is pregnant. The chaos keeps stacking. The vibe here is relentless absurdist comedy — less joke-setup-punchline and more 'the world simply does not function correctly and Haré is the only one who notices.' If you liked FLCL's brand of surreal weirdness where logic is optional, or Excel Saga's commitment to completely unhinged energy, this sits comfortably in that neighborhood. The animation from Shin-Ei leans into exaggerated expressions hard, and the soundtrack is genuinely catchy in a way that'll stick around longer than expected. It's a short watch at six episodes, and it assumes you've seen the original TV series, so start there first. But if you're already a fan, Deluxe is exactly more of what made the first run work.
