A former biker gang leader, Onizuka, becomes a teacher with unconventional methods, clashing with students and administrators while pursuing his less-than-pure intentions.

📖 SYNOPSIS

Meet Eikichi Onizuka, a 22-year-old ex-biker gang leader with one dream: to become the greatest high school teacher in Japan — not because he cares about education, but because he thinks it's a good way to meet girls. That's the starting point, and it only gets better from there. He somehow lands a job at the prestigious Holy Forest Academy and gets assigned to Class 3-4, a group of students so ruthless they've made it their mission to psychologically destroy every teacher who walks through the door. They've driven multiple adults to resignation or worse. Onizuka, being a former delinquent with the emotional maturity of a teenager and the physical durability of a tank, doesn't break the way they expect. Instead, he starts actually connecting with these kids, solving their real problems through methods that would get any normal teacher fired on the spot. The show walks this line between genuinely funny comedy and surprisingly emotional character work. One episode Onizuka is suplexing someone, the next he's helping a student through something legitimately painful. It's a 43-episode TV series that earns its runtime without dragging. If you liked Assassination Classroom's unconventional teacher dynamic or Gokusen's delinquent-turned-educator setup, this is the blueprint they were working from. Golden Boy fans will also appreciate Onizuka's shameless energy. The 1999 animation has its charm, and honestly, the writing holds up better than most modern school comedies. It's one of those shows where the protagonist's growth sneaks up on you.

✨ MUST WATCH IF...

You're okay with a protagonist who's perverted, lazy, and crude—but surprisingly heartfelt when it counts
Episodic arcs tackling bullying, family trauma, and student sabotage wrapped in raunchy comedy sound appealing
You love watching a delinquent outsider win over an entire class of hostile students across 43 episodes
Onizuka's over-the-top facial expressions and physical comedy from Studio Pierrot carry the humor hard

❌ SKIP IF...

Sexist jokes and constant perverted gags from the lead character aren't your kind of humor
Late-'90s animation with washed-out colors and minimal detail is a dealbreaker for you
The final third leans into melodrama—you want consistently tight writing across all 43 episodes
