Synopsis

A penniless scholarship student at a school for absurdly rich kids, Haruhi Fujioka just wants a quiet room to study in. She just wants a quiet room to study in, but instead she walks into the Host Club — six pretty boys whose entire job is charming the school's female students — and immediately knocks over a vase worth 8 million yen. Since she can't pay, she has to work it off by becoming a host herself. The catch: everyone thinks she's a guy, and the club is happy to keep it that way. What makes this 26-episode TV series work is that it knows exactly what it's doing. Ouran takes every shoujo cliché — the brooding prince, the mysterious cool type, the cute one, the twins with boundary issues — and plays them completely straight while also making fun of them. Tamaki, the club president, is dramatic enough to fill an entire show on his own, and the way Haruhi just doesn't react to any of his nonsense is genuinely funny every time. Studio Bones gave this sharp comedic timing and surprisingly expressive animation for 2006. But underneath the comedy, there's real warmth. These characters actually grow on each other, and the quieter moments land because the show earns them. If you liked the found-family energy of Fruits Basket or the class-gap romance in Kaichou wa Maid-sama, this hits a similar sweet spot. Fans of Special A will also feel right at home with the elite school setting and the slow-burn dynamics.

Tamaki is such a sweetheart, and it really shows here how, in his endearingly clueless way, he tries not to make Haruhi feel bad or look down on her; on the contrary, he appreciates everything she does. That’s why Haruhi’s dad sees himself in him in the end.

Peak rom-com reverse harem anime! Had me giggling throughout the whole run. Every character has a personality and backstory worth caring about. The last two episodes diverge from the original manga but pull off a good enough open-ended conclusion. Going to miss this show badly. Still waiting here at Music Room #3...

Almost at the finale and things just got serious fast. Like father, like son huh. Of course the most cheerful guy has the saddest backstory. Lady Eclair is insufferable. Ends on a cliffhanger but at this point you already feel where it's going. Heartbreaking episode.
