Synopsis
In one devastating sweep, Chitose Fujinomiya loses everything at once—her father dies, his debts wipe her out completely, and the spoiled rich girl gets kicked out of her fancy private school with nothing but the clothes on her back and a little pink goldfish named Gyopi-chan. She ends up collapsing on the grounds of a rural school where chickens and farm animals wander into classrooms like it's completely normal, because at Inaka no Chugakko, it apparently is. Chitose is horrified. The locals are cheerful. Neither side knows what to make of the other. That tension is basically the whole engine of the show, and it works. The humor comes from watching someone deeply committed to being a snob slowly get worn down by a community that simply refuses to be bothered by her attitude. The chibi art style leans into the comedy, and the animal-students-in-class setup gives everything a pleasantly weird energy that keeps things from feeling like a standard fish-out-of-water story. It's a 54-episode Toei series from 1991, so expect that classic early-90s shoujo charm throughout. If you grew up with Jewelpet or enjoyed the slice-of-life warmth of Akane-chan, this fits comfortably in that space. Fans of Lovely Complex who like their comedies centered on stubborn, lovable characters adjusting to new social dynamics will also find something to enjoy here. It is genuinely funny without being mean-spirited, which is harder to pull off than it sounds.
