Giant Beasts of Ars
Oshimeter
Synopsis
For decades, giant beasts have threatened humanity, and the people tasked with killing them come in pairs: Paladins, the warriors, and Clerics, walking magical weapons whose powers are too volatile to control on their own. Jiiro is a former Paladin who lost his partner and has no interest in getting back in the fight. Then he meets Kuumi, a young woman who just discovered she's a Cleric — and who's on the run from a shady research facility that very much wants her back. After they form a contract to survive a beast attack, Jiiro reluctantly becomes her protector. Joined by Myaa, a kid in a cat headdress, the three set off across the world of Ars, and what starts as a straightforward chase story gradually pulls back layers to reveal that the real danger might not be the monsters at all. The Paladin-Cleric dynamic is genuinely interesting — it's a symbiotic power system where one person is essentially a living weapon and the other is the trigger, which raises some uncomfortable questions the show is willing to sit with. If you liked the "humanity vs. titans" tension of Attack on Titan or the creature-hunting vibes of Monster Hunter Stories, this 12-episode TV series from 2023 hits similar notes on a smaller scale. It's not reinventing the genre, but the world-building is solid, the conspiracy threads keep things moving, and at 12 episodes it doesn't overstay its welcome.
