Synopsis

Locked away and left to rot in prison, Ryoma Nagare stands convicted of allegedly murdering his own mentor, Dr. Saotome, with no way out. Then Dr. Saotome shows up alive — and he's brought something called the Shin Dragon that could end the world. So now Ryoma has to get out of his cell and climb back into the cockpit of Getter Robo alongside his old teammates Hayato and Musashi, none of whom exactly trust each other anymore. On top of that, alien parasites called Invaders are possessing people and warping their bodies into nightmare fuel. This is a 13-episode OVA from 1998 by Brain's Base, and it's the version of Getter Robo that actually matches the darkness of the original manga. The mecha fights are brutal, the body horror is genuinely unsettling, and the character dynamics carry real weight — betrayal, guilt, fractured loyalty. The soundtrack goes hard too, giving everything this relentless, oppressive atmosphere that doesn't let up. If you liked the psychological dread of Neon Genesis Evangelion but want something that leans harder into violent super robot action, this scratches that itch. Fans of Mazinger Z will recognize the DNA here, and honestly, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann owes a lot to the energy Getter Robo pioneered. It's not polished or subtle — it's raw, angry mecha anime with a pitch-black tone and zero interest in holding your hand. That's the appeal.
