Gestalt
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Father Olivier turns his back on his holy order to visit an island so cursed that nobody will even say its name out loud. That's his whole deal — he's chasing a forbidden god named Gestalt who's supposedly been exiled to this mysterious island known only as 'G', and the church is not happy about it. Along the way, he picks up Ohri, a mute girl who communicates through magical floating text boxes, which is as charming and weird as it sounds. Then there's Suzu, a dark elf sent by the Order to drag Olivier back home, who adds a layer of chaotic pursuit energy to the whole thing. It's a short ride — just a 2-episode OVA from 1997 — so it doesn't overstay its welcome. The tone bounces between genuine fantasy adventure and self-aware comedy, especially in how Olivier and Ohri play off each other. If you grew up on Record of Lodoss War or Slayers, this scratches a similar itch — classic high-fantasy world-building with a lighter touch. Fans of Bastard!! will recognize that same 80s-90s RPG aesthetic running underneath everything. It's clearly working from manga roots and doesn't try to hide it. The character designs have personality, and the comedic timing lands more often than you'd expect from something this short. Worth an afternoon if you want a dose of late-90s fantasy that doesn't take itself too seriously.
