After Episode 1 established Brotherhood's world and tone through fast-paced action, Episode 2 deliberately shifts gears to lay the emotional and thematic groundwork for the Elrics' 64-episode journey. This backstory episode contextualizes everything that follows — the brothers' guilt, their bond, and the rules of equivalent exchange that govern the series. It feeds directly into Episode 3, where the Elrics encounter a priest in Reole performing apparent miracles, putting their hard-learned lessons about alchemy's limits to an immediate test.
