As Episode 1 of 24, 'The First Day' is pure table-setting — there is nothing before it, and everything after it depends on what it establishes. It builds the civilian baseline for Shirou's life so that the Holy Grail War, introduced in the following episode 'Fateful Night,' carries genuine stakes. The heavier mythological and action-driven machinery of Fate/stay night cannot land without this foundation.
