Eternal Family
Oshimeter
Synopsis
What happens when someone implants false memories in six strangers and convinces them they're a family — while someone else broadcasts every moment of it on live television? That's the setup for Eternal Family, a 1997 movie from Studio 4°C that plays like The Truman Show crossed with something far weirder and less comfortable. The 'family' includes a pyromaniac daughter, a mute girl who only communicates through a puppet, a sadistic youngest son, and a mother dealing with chronic constipation. One member, the father, actually knows the truth. The rest have had false memories implanted and genuinely believe this chaos is just... their life. The whole thing gets broadcast as a reality show while they stay completely oblivious to the cameras. What makes it work is that stripping away their fake memories didn't strip away what made each of them a societal outcast in the first place. So you get this fabricated family unit full of genuinely unhinged people who should not be living together, filmed without their knowledge, in a darkly comedic setup that keeps nudging at questions about identity and what's even real. If you liked the psychological unease of Paranoia Agent or the anarchic visual energy of Dead Leaves, this sits in a similar neighborhood. It's a single 30-minute movie, so the commitment is low. The animation style alone is worth the time — Studio 4°C does not make boring-looking things.
