Dorohedoro
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Caiman has a reptilian head, zero memories, and one bizarre investigative technique — biting down on sorcerers' heads to ask the face living inside his throat one question: "Are you the one who did this to me?" That's the everyday reality of a resident of a place literally called Hole — a grimy, lawless district where magic users treat humans like lab rats. His best friend Nikaido runs a gyoza restaurant by day and helps him hunt sorcerers by night. It's weirdly wholesome for a show where people get dismembered on a regular basis. Dorohedoro is a 12-episode TV series from MAPPA, adapted from a seinen manga, and it nails a tone that's genuinely hard to pull off — equal parts gross-out horror, legitimate mystery, and buddy comedy. The world-building is dense and strange, with a magic system based on black smoke that each sorcerer channels differently. The mix of 2D and 3D animation gives everything this grimy, textured look that fits the setting perfectly. And the soundtrack is all over the place in the best way. If you liked the chaotic energy and gore of Chainsaw Man, or the weird dark humor of Hell's Paradise, this scratches a similar itch but with its own distinct flavor. Fans of Sakamoto Days' blend of action and comedy might also find something to love here. Just know going in — this show is messy, violent, and doesn't hold your hand. That's kind of the whole appeal.
