When a meteor strikes Earth, somehow things got worse from there. A militaristic regime called the Trader Force moved in during the chaos, and now they're running the place like an occupation. Tetsuro Daiba lost his parents in the disaster, which is already a rough setup — but then a mysterious woman named Mello appears in a flash of light, and he wakes up in a spaceship infirmary with no real explanation for how he got there. He does what any reasonable person would do: steals a fighter jet he's never seen before. Except he can fly it perfectly, like the knowledge was already inside him. Turns out, it kind of was. The story leans into this idea that certain abilities are encoded in your DNA, inherited memories waiting to switch on under the right pressure. He eventually crosses paths with Rei Yuuki, another survivor carrying similar unexplained gifts, and a telepathic cat, because sure, why not. Together they start pulling at threads that lead somewhere much bigger than a simple survival story. If you grew up watching Galaxy Express 999 or Captain Harlock, this one-episode OVA from Madhouse has that same Leiji Matsumoto energy — retro space opera aesthetics, emotionally grounded characters, and a universe that feels genuinely lived-in. It's short, so it doesn't overstay its welcome, and the DNA memory concept alone is worth the runtime.
