Classroom of the Elite
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Few anime protagonists work as hard as Kiyotaka Ayanokouji does at being deliberately unremarkable. He barely emotes, scores exactly average on every test, and seems content to coast through high school doing absolutely nothing. Except his school isn't normal. Koudo Ikusei Senior High School sorts students into classes A through D based on merit, and only the top classes get the good stuff — money, privileges, resources. Class D is where they throw the rejects, and that's where Kiyotaka ends up, alongside Suzune Horikita, a cold loner convinced she doesn't belong there, and Kikyou Kushida, the class sweetheart who wants to be everyone's best friend. The 12-episode TV series from Lerche peels back layers slowly — the school's system is ruthless, alliances shift constantly, and Kiyotaka clearly knows more than he lets on. The fun is watching him operate from the shadows while everyone underestimates him. It's a psychological drama wrapped in a school setting, where every conversation feels like a chess move and nobody's motives are clean. If you liked the social dissection in My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU or the mind games from Kakegurui but want something more grounded, this hits that sweet spot. The tone sits closer to Assassination Classroom's competitive class dynamics, minus the comedy. Fair warning though — the anime covers early light novel material, so it's more of a slow burn setup than a full payoff. But what a setup it is.
