Choujin Densetsu Urotsukidouji Movie
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Every 3,000 years, ancient legend holds, a supreme being called the Choujin emerges to unite the human world with the demon realm and the beast-man realm — and someone walking around a Japanese high school right now might be the one. That's the setup for Urotsukidouji, a 1989 movie that takes ancient mythology, drops it into a grubby urban setting, and cranks the darkness up past where most anime dare to go. Amano Jyaku, a beast-man who's been hunting for the Choujin across centuries, thinks he's finally found the host: an ordinary student named Nagumo. Protecting him means keeping the demons at bay — demons who'd rather destroy the Choujin than let the cosmic transformation happen. The mythology here is surprisingly layered for a 1989 production, building out three distinct realms with their own politics and motivations rather than just using demons as generic threats. The tone is brutal and unrelenting, so go in knowing this is explicit horror territory — not a gateway watch, but definitely a historically significant one. If you've seen Wicked City or Demon Beast Invasion and want to understand where that whole era of dark supernatural anime came from, this is essentially the origin point. It's rough around the edges in the way 80s OVA productions often are, but the ambition behind the mythology and the sheer commitment to its vision make it worth understanding as a piece of anime history.
