Chobits

A broke country kid cramming for college entrance exams, Hideki Motosuwa lives in a world where personal computers look like people. He can't even afford a regular one, so naturally he finds one in the trash. She's beautiful, she seems broken, and the only word she can say is 'Chi.' That becomes her name. From there, Hideki basically has to teach this persocom how to exist — buying underwear, learning words, figuring out how a grocery store works — and it's genuinely funny in that fish-out-of-water way. But underneath the comedy, Chobits is asking a surprisingly heavy question: can you actually love something that was built to make you happy? And does it matter if they love you back? The show does this thing where it balances goofy ecchi humor with moments that are quietly devastating, especially as you learn more about Chi's origins and meet other people whose lives have been shaped by their relationships with persocoms. CLAMP's character designs are gorgeous, Madhouse's animation holds up well for 2002, and the soundtrack has this gentle, melancholic quality that sticks with you. At 26 episodes it never drags too much. If you liked Angelic Layer's blend of warmth and sci-fi, or the stranger-in-a-strange-land dynamic from DearS but want something with more emotional depth, this is worth your time. It's a romance that happens to be about technology, or maybe a technology story that happens to be about what makes love real.
