Candy Candy (Movie)
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Scrappy, bright, and somehow relentlessly cheerful through all of it, Candy is an orphan who climbs trees, gets into trouble, and makes herself easy to root for right from the start. Left as a baby on the doorstep of a small orphanage near Lake Michigan, she grows up with the sisters and the other kids there, including her best friend Annie. Life at Pony's Home is simple and warm, but things shift when Candy is sent to live with the wealthy Leagan family as a companion for their daughter. The Leagan kids are not kind people, and watching Candy navigate that without losing herself is where the story quietly earns its emotional weight. The historical early 20th century setting gives everything a grounded, storybook quality that Toei Animation renders with genuine care, and the soundtrack does a lot of heavy lifting in the quieter moments. If you grew up with Alps no Shoujo Heidi or have any soft spot for Ashita no Nadja, the DNA is similar — resilient girl, difficult circumstances, a lot of heart. This is shoujo drama that leans into feelings without being manipulative about it. It is not a long commitment at just one movie, so it works as a gentle, nostalgic watch when you want something romantic and emotional without a 100-episode investment.
