Synopsis

At 13 years old, Baki Hanma is already fighting grown men in underground tournaments. His goal isn't fame or money — it's to surpass his father, Yuujirou Hanma, a man so terrifyingly powerful that governments use him as a weapon. That's the kind of mountain Baki is trying to climb. The setup is straightforward: Baki trains obsessively, seeks out the strongest fighters he can find, and gets into brutal, no-rules brawls to push himself closer to his father's level. What makes it work is how seriously it takes the fighting. Every fighter has a distinct style — boxing, wrestling, karate, street brawling — and the show digs into the mechanics of each matchup rather than just having characters throw punches until someone falls down. It's grimy and occasionally graphic, and it doesn't shy away from showing what this kind of life actually costs. The tone is dark and relentless. This isn't a show about friendship or growing up — it's about obsession and violence, with a kid at the center who genuinely doesn't know anything else. If you watched Kengan Ashura and wanted something older and rougher around the edges, this is it. Fans of Shigurui's brutal, unromantic take on combat will find familiar ground here too. It's a 24-episode TV series from 2001, so the animation is dated, but the fights still hit hard if you can meet it on its own terms.
