Synopsis

Enrolling a 10-year-old genius in high school is already a strange premise, and Azumanga Daioh: The Very Short Movie leans even harder into the weird than that suggests. This six-minute special from J.C.Staff is essentially a sampler platter of the slice-of-life comedy the full series is known for — sketches about botched test scores, tongue-twisters gone wrong, a cat with a personal grudge against Sakaki, and Osaka having a deeply unhinged dream about Chiyo's pigtails detaching and flying out a window like they have somewhere better to be. That last one is played completely straight, which is kind of the whole joke. The humor here is low-stakes and surreal — nobody's saving the world, nobody's in danger. It's just a group of girls with very distinct personalities bouncing off each other in the most mundane high school situations imaginable, and somehow that's genuinely funny. If you already watch Lucky Star or Nichijou, the DNA here will feel immediately familiar — this is one of the blueprints those shows were built from. If you've never seen Azumanga Daioh and want to know what the fuss is about before committing, this short is a painless way to get a feel for the characters and tone. It won't take up much of your afternoon, and it's a solid introduction to what the CGDCT genre looked like back when it was still finding its footing.
