Three middle school girls – a blonde who can't speak English, a bespectacled girl, and a cheerful one – form a "Players' Club" in this ultimately cute and hilarious teenage comedy.

📖 SYNOPSIS

That gentle, pastel art style? It's a trap — Asobi Asobase is one of the most unhinged comedy anime you'll come across. The opening looks like a gentle slice-of-life about cute girls doing cute things, and then the show hits you with some of the most distorted facial expressions and absurd screaming you've ever seen in animation.

The setup is simple: three middle school girls — Hanako, a loudmouth with zero filter; Olivia, a foreign student who hilariously pretends she can't speak Japanese well; and Kasumi, a deadpan loner sick of losing games to her older sister — somehow end up forming the "Pastimers Club," an unofficial school club dedicated to playing random games. That's it. That's the premise. And from there, this 12-episode TV series by Studio Lerche just spirals into increasingly chaotic gag humor where every mundane school situation somehow escalates into complete nonsense.

What makes it work is the chemistry between the three leads. Their dynamic feeds off each other perfectly — one provokes, one reacts, one silently judges, and then they all lose their minds together. The animation leans hard into exaggerated expressions that genuinely catch you off guard, which is where most of the comedy lands.

If you liked Nichijou or Daily Lives of High School Boys, this hits a similar nerve — everyday scenarios pushed to their most absurd conclusions. Fans of Azumanga Daioh's character-driven humor will find a lot to enjoy here too, just with way more screaming.

✨ MUST WATCH IF...

You love absurd gag humor that subverts the 'cute girls doing cute things' genre hard
Exaggerated, almost horrifying facial expressions from Lerche's animation team crack you up
You're fine with crude jokes — toilet humor, sexual innuendos, and gross-out gags throughout all 12 episodes
The chaotic trio dynamic — airhead Hanako, deadpan Kasumi, and fake-foreigner Olivia — sounds fun to you

❌ SKIP IF...

You want any overarching plot or character development — it's pure episodic skit comedy
Vulgar and risqué humor is a dealbreaker — this leans into it frequently and unapologetically
Rapid-fire gag pacing exhausts you — there's barely a breather between bits across 12 episodes
