Animation × Paralympic: Who Is Your Hero?
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Imagine Yoichi Takahashi, the creator of Captain Tsubasa, drawing a blind soccer match between Japan and Brazil. That's the first episode of Ani x Para, and honestly, that concept alone got me curious enough to check it out. This NHK TV Special is a series of short animated segments, each tackling a different Paralympic sport with character designs by a different well-known manga artist. The first episode throws you into the intensity of blind soccer — players navigating the field entirely by sound, going up against the world champions. The second episode follows a female sprinter with a prosthetic leg, with designs by Eisaku Kubonouchi, and traces her path toward competing at the Paralympics. Each segment is brief, so you're not committing to a long watch, but the stories hit harder than you'd expect from something this short. The animation captures the physical reality of these sports without sugarcoating anything, and the athletes feel like real competitors, not inspiration porn. If you liked Captain Tsubasa or Baby Steps for how they make you care about the mechanics of a sport, this does something similar but for disciplines most people never think about. It's closer to Yowamushi Pedal in spirit — underdog athletes pushing through barriers that go beyond just skill. The short format means there's zero filler. You watch, you learn something, you feel something, and you move on a little more informed than before.
