Synopsis
At just 16, Setsuna Mudo is already dealing with two problems: bullies at school, and the fact that he's in love with his younger sister Sara. Before he can even begin to process that second one, angels and demons show up to inform him he's the reincarnation of Alexiel, a powerful angel who once led a rebellion against God. So now he's got three problems. This 3-episode OVA from 2000 is adapted from Kaori Yuki's manga, and it leans hard into that late-90s shoujo darkness — forbidden love, celestial warfare, moral ambiguity, all wrapped in gorgeous artwork that makes both Heaven and Earth look equally haunting. The soundtrack pulls its weight too, setting a moody, dramatic tone that fits the whole "ancient conflict crashing into a teenager's life" vibe perfectly. It's a short watch, so don't expect the full manga story — think of it more as a atmospheric window into this world. The emotional core is genuinely compelling though. Setsuna's internal conflict between his human feelings and his cosmic destiny carries real weight, and the series doesn't shy away from the uncomfortable parts of its premise. If you liked the apocalyptic melodrama of X/1999 or the angel-mythology-meets-teenage-angst energy of Neon Genesis Evangelion, this hits a similar nerve. Fans of Devilman Crybaby's blend of the sacred and profane will find familiar ground here too, just with a more romantic, gothic lens. It's dark, it's pretty, and it doesn't hold your hand.
