Synopsis
After trading Tokyo for a quiet seaside town, Futaba Ooki doesn't know a single person. She's the kind of girl who hides behind her phone camera, cataloguing everything at a distance instead of actually living in it. Then she meets Hikari Kohinata, a local girl who's completely obsessed with scuba diving and has the energy of a golden retriever. Hikari latches onto Futaba, nicknames her 'Teko,' and basically drags her into the school's Diving Club run by their laid-back homeroom teacher. What follows across 12 episodes is Futaba slowly opening up — learning to breathe underwater, learning to breathe above it too. The scuba diving stuff is genuinely detailed and kind of fascinating if you've ever been curious about it, and J.C.Staff nails the coastal scenery and underwater sequences with this lush, warm animation style. The soundtrack by Gontiti is all acoustic guitar and gentle melodies, the kind of thing you'd put on while napping in a hammock. This is pure iyashikei — healing anime. Nothing bad happens. Nobody dies. You just watch two girls become friends and discover something beautiful together. If you liked Aria the Animation or Tamayura, this is cut from the same cloth. Even fans of K-On! who want something with a similar friendship dynamic but a more contemplative pace will find a lot to love here. It's the anime equivalent of a deep, slow breath.
