AKB0048: Next Stage
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Picture a galaxy ruled by a militarized organization that has outlawed all forms of entertainment — they will literally shoot you for singing. The idol group AKB0048 doesn't care — they perform guerrilla concerts on oppressed planets, arriving in mecha-equipped starships and putting on shows while dodging live fire. That's the world this TV series drops you into, and honestly, it's way more compelling than it has any right to be. Next Stage picks up a year after the 77th generation understudies joined the group. AKB0048 reinstates the general elections and the center nova position — a role no one has held since a previous member mysteriously vanished. Now the understudies aren't just competing with each other; they're going up against the successors directly. Meanwhile, DES is escalating its crackdowns, and something bigger and more dangerous is moving in the background. What makes this work is the contrast. You've got these girls pouring everything into choreography and vocal training, and then they're literally fighting a war for the right to perform. The rebellion-through-music angle gives the idol stuff actual stakes, and Satelight delivers concert sequences that pop with energy and color. If you liked the emotional drive of Idoly Pride or the friendship dynamics of BanG Dream but wished someone would add space battles and dystopian politics, this is exactly that blend. It leans into both sides without apologizing for either. Thirteen episodes, and it earns its emotional beats.
