Ahiru no Sora
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Standing at barely 149 cm, Sora Kurumatani wants to dominate basketball. That's already an uphill battle, but it gets worse — the basketball club at his new high school, Kuzuryuu High, has been completely taken over by delinquents who use the gym as their personal hangout. Nobody on the roster actually plays. Sora shows up on day one ready to fulfill a promise to his sick mother, and instead finds himself face to face with guys like Momoharu Hanazono, a former player turned troublemaker, and his twin brother Chiaki, who couldn't care less about anything. The whole first stretch of this 50-episode TV series is about Sora dragging these guys back into caring about the sport, one stubborn interaction at a time. What makes Ahiru no Sora work is that it doesn't hand anyone easy wins. The games feel grounded, the losses actually sting, and the character arcs have real weight — especially around themes of redemption and finding purpose through teamwork. It's less flashy than Kuroko no Basket and more raw, closer in spirit to Slam Dunk's focus on personal growth over superhuman plays. If you liked Dear Boys or just want a basketball anime where the underdog story doesn't skip the painful parts, this one earns its emotional moments honestly. Studio Diomedéa adapted this from a long-running shounen manga, and the slower pacing lets you actually sit with these characters as they figure themselves out.
