Ah! My Goddess: The Movie
Oshimeter
Synopsis
An ordinary college student named Keiichi Morisato had his life changed forever when a goddess named Belldandy showed up and granted his wish — that she'd stay by his side. They've been living together ever since, navigating the awkward comedy of a mortal dating a divine being. This movie picks up from that setup and throws a real wrench into things. Celestin, Belldandy's former mentor who's been locked away on the moon for betraying the heavenly realm of Yggdrasil, breaks free and comes looking for her. He wipes Belldandy's memories of Keiichi entirely, then starts using her connection to Yggdrasil to unleash something that threatens both Earth and the heavens. So now Keiichi has to fight for a relationship that his girlfriend doesn't even remember exists. The blend of Norse mythology woven into a modern Japanese college setting gives the whole thing a texture that feels distinct, and AIC's animation here is genuinely impressive for 2000 — the action sequences and emotional beats both land harder because of it. The soundtrack does a lot of heavy lifting too, especially during the quieter romantic moments. If you liked the supernatural-romance dynamic in Chobits or the harem-adjacent warmth of Tenchi Muyo, this hits a similar sweet spot. Fans of The World God Only Knows will appreciate the comedic-romantic tone paired with genuine stakes. It's a movie that respects the relationship at its center while putting it through something worth watching.
