Synopsis
Nobody would ever call Sae Iwata the dainty type. She's tall, strong, and spent most of her childhood being the protector of her fragile best friend, Kouki Kamishiro. Then puberty happened, Kouki shot up in height, got confident, got popular, and the two of them drifted apart. Classic story. But when they reconnect near the end of middle school, Sae realizes the feelings she buried years ago are very much still there — and now she has no idea what to do with them. Heading into high school, Kouki is suddenly the guy every girl notices, and Sae is stuck between wanting to be close to him again and feeling like she doesn't fit the mold of someone he'd fall for. The series is really about that tension between how you see yourself and how you want to be seen, wrapped in a warm, sometimes funny school romance that doesn't rush things. Studio KAI leans into expressive character animation — small gestures, awkward glances, the stuff that actually sells a romance. The soundtrack by Natsumi Tabuchi and Miki Sakurai hits the right notes without being overbearing. If you liked Ao Haru Ride's bittersweet reconnection dynamic or the way Kimi ni Todoke handles a heroine who feels out of place, this is in that lane. There's a bit of Toradora energy too, with the whole subverted expectations around who's tough and who's gentle. Twelve episodes, shoujo manga source, and a lead character worth rooting for.
