As the first of three standalone-yet-connected episodes, Cherry Blossom lays the emotional foundation for the entire film by establishing Takaki and Akari's bond and the painful reality of physical separation during youth. Everything that follows in episodes two and three builds on the feelings and memories rooted here. This is the origin point — the relationship against which all future longing, distance, and growth will be measured.
