Yatterman Night
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Imagine a world where the villains were right all along. Yatterman Night takes the classic Yatterman franchise and flips it completely. Leopard is a nine-year-old girl living in poverty outside the gleaming Yatter Kingdom, raised by her mom and two goofy guardians. She grows up believing the Yatterman are heroes — until her mother gets sick and the kingdom refuses to help, letting her die. That's when Leopard discovers her family's secret: she's a descendant of the Doronbo Gang, the villains from the original series. So she does what any furious kid would do — she puts on the mask and declares war on the people who were supposed to be the good guys. This 12-episode TV series from Tatsunoko Production has a tone that catches you off guard. It looks bright and almost playful at first, but the emotional weight hits hard and early. Leopard's little ragtag group wandering through a corrupt kingdom, meeting broken people along the way — it carries that same melancholy journey feel you'd get from Casshern Sins, but with more warmth and humor mixed in. If you liked how Samurai Flamenco deconstructed hero tropes, or how Gatchaman Crowds questioned what heroism actually means, this one's in that same headspace. You don't need to know anything about the original Yatterman either. It stands on its own as a story about a kid who learns that heroes and villains aren't always what they seem.
