When Marnie Was There
Oshimeter
Synopsis
At just 12 years old, foster kid Anna Sasaki can barely breathe — literally, because of her asthma, but also emotionally. She's withdrawn, lonely, and convinced she doesn't belong anywhere. When she's sent to spend the summer with relatives in a quiet seaside town in Hokkaido, she stumbles across an old abandoned mansion by the marshes. And that's where she meets Marnie — a golden-haired girl who seems to live in the house, even though no one else seems to know she exists. Their friendship unfolds in this dreamy, half-real way where you're never quite sure what's happening, but you feel everything. The mystery of who Marnie actually is pulls you through the story, but the real weight comes from watching Anna slowly confront why she's built walls around herself. It's Studio Ghibli's last film before they went on hiatus, and the hand-drawn animation is gorgeous — all soft coastal light and quiet, lived-in spaces. The emotional tone sits somewhere between melancholy and hopeful, with a soundtrack that knows exactly when to let silence do the work. If you liked the gentle pacing of The Secret World of Arrietty or the emotional gut-punch of Wolf Children, this one fits right in that space. It's a movie about grief, identity, and the kind of friendship that changes how you see yourself. Bring tissues, honestly.
