📖 SYNOPSIS
In the gilded halls of pre-revolutionary France, opulence and political rot reign side by side, where one wrong alliance could topple a kingdom. Oscar François de Jarjayes is a noblewoman raised from birth as a man because her father needed an heir, and now she's Captain of the Royal Guards at Versailles. Her job: protect Marie Antoinette, the young Austrian princess who just arrived to marry the awkward crown prince Louis XVI. What follows is a tangle of loyalty, identity, and unspoken feelings as Oscar navigates court politics, her complicated bond with childhood friend André, and the growing unrest outside the palace walls. This is a movie adaptation of the legendary shoujo manga by Riyoko Ikeda, brought to life by MAPPA, and the animation leans hard into the opulence — every chandelier, every military uniform, every sidelong glance carries weight. The tone is deeply emotional and romantic without being saccharine. It takes gender roles, duty, and revolution seriously, and it earns the drama rather than forcing it. If you liked the gothic historical atmosphere of The Case Study of Vanitas or the quiet tension of navigating rigid social hierarchies in A Gentle Noble's Vacation Recommendation, this hits a similar nerve but with far higher stakes. The French Revolution is coming, and nobody in Versailles is ready for it — least of all the people trying to hold it together from the inside.
