The Man From Dao Xiang Cun
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Shen Jianxin is a security guard from a small village called Daoxiang who really, really wants to be a legendary hero. The problem is, he lives in a quiet village during the Tang Dynasty where the most exciting thing should be rice harvests. Instead, he comes home to find the place overrun with bizarre mysteries, unsolved cases, and inventions that have no business existing in ancient China. So naturally, he and his ragtag group of friends decide to investigate all of it. The vibe here is comedic martial arts adventure with a surprisingly charming 3D animation style from Seasun Pictures. It's based on the Jian Wang 3 game universe, and if you've seen Jian Wang 3: Xia Gan Yi Dan Shen Jianxin, this is basically more time with that world but leaning harder into the comedy and slice-of-life weirdness. Think Shen Zai Jiong Tu's humor mixed with a wuxia setting. Each episode is only about five minutes, so the whole 35-episode ONA run is something you can knock out in a single sitting without committing your entire evening. It doesn't take itself seriously at all, which is kind of the point. The Tang Dynasty backdrop gives it just enough historical flavor to feel distinct, but the show is more interested in being funny than being accurate. If you liked Jueshi Shen Huang's blend of action and absurdity, this scratches a similar itch — just in much smaller, snackable doses.
