The Classroom of a Black Cat and a Witch
Oshimeter
Synopsis
All Spica Virgo has ever dreamed of is becoming a great sorceress, but she's got two problems: her magic is mediocre, and she has zero connections to get into the Royal Diana Academy, the most prestigious magic school around. Then she meets a talking black cat who turns out to be a cursed sorcerer — and possibly the key to everything she's been working toward. He agrees to train her in exchange for help breaking his curse, and that's how Spica ends up with the world's most unconventional magic tutor. The setup is pretty simple, but what makes this work is the dynamic between the two leads. You've got this eager, slightly over-her-head apprentice paired with a mentor who's literally been reduced to a house cat. The comedy writes itself, and the fantasy elements give it room to breathe beyond just jokes. There's a genuine mystery underneath about who this cat actually was and why he disappeared, which keeps things from feeling too lightweight. If you liked Little Witch Academia's vibe of an underdog girl clawing her way through magic school, this hits a similar note. There's also a bit of The Familiar of Zero energy in the mismatched mentor-student thing, though way more chill. LIDENFILMS is handling the animation for this 2026 TV series, adapting a web manga that's been quietly building a following. It's comedic, youthful, and the kind of fantasy that doesn't take itself too seriously while still giving you reasons to care about where it's going.

Quick Takes
View all 61 takesThe 3D eagles took me out a little bit, they looked way too out of place; especially the way their wings flapped?? It was so goofy
The relationship with Hana and Spica was the highlight of this episode! Not only do they have chemistry during combat, but also have a dynamic that has easily become my favorite within Spica's friendships so far.
