In class, the bored Seki-kun crafts elaborate distractions like miniature golf and paper shogi wars, captivating his classmate Yokoi and often getting her into trouble.

📖 SYNOPSIS

All Rumi Yokoi wants is to pay attention in class. That's it. That's her whole goal. But her seatmate, Toshinari Seki, has turned his desk into a stage for the most absurdly elaborate distractions imaginable. One day he's building a full domino course across his tiny desk. The next he's staging an emotionally gripping war drama using shogi pieces, complete with betrayals and tragic deaths. Yokoi keeps telling herself she won't look, and she keeps looking. Worse, she starts getting emotionally invested — rooting for specific shogi pieces, worrying about the structural integrity of his desk robots, silently narrating his activities like a nature documentary in her head. And somehow, she's always the one who gets caught by the teacher.

Tonari no Seki-kun is a 21-episode TV series with short episodes, around seven minutes each, which makes it perfect for when you want something light between heavier watches. The format works because the premise is simple — each episode is basically one class period, one new desk activity, one new way for Yokoi to lose her composure. It never overstays its welcome.

If you liked the everyday absurdity of Nichijou or the deadpan school comedy of Azumanga Daioh, this hits a similar spot but in smaller, more concentrated doses. The humor comes from Yokoi's increasingly dramatic internal reactions to things that are, objectively, just a guy messing around at his desk. It's the kind of low-stakes comedy that's genuinely relaxing to watch.

✨ MUST WATCH IF...

You love short-form comedy — each of the 21 episodes is only about seven minutes long
Seki's wildly creative desk antics — dominoes, shogi wars, miniature golf — keep things inventive every episode
You enjoy character-driven humor where one kid's silent mischief drives another kid absolutely crazy
You want something lighthearted and episodic — no overarching plot, just pure classroom comedy bits

❌ SKIP IF...

You need an ongoing storyline or character development — every episode resets the same formula
Shin-Ei Animation's simple visuals here won't satisfy if you're after dynamic or detailed art
Yokoi's constant internal monologues narrating Seki's every move can feel one-note across 21 episodes
