Synopsis

With a pompadour that defies physics and self-awareness that registers at absolute zero, Dandy is an alien hunter who cruises the universe in a ship called the Aloha Oe, looking for undiscovered species to register for cash. His crew is a busted vacuum cleaner robot named QT and a cat-like alien called Meow who contributes almost nothing. Most of the money ends up spent at BooBies, a Hooters-style intergalactic diner chain, so they're perpetually broke. Meanwhile, the evil Gogol Empire is chasing Dandy for reasons he's completely oblivious to, which tells you everything about this guy's awareness level. What makes this TV series special is that every episode is basically its own thing. One week it's a zombie apocalypse, the next it's a surprisingly thoughtful meditation on loneliness, and then it's a drag race through hyperspace. Studio Bones let different directors and animators go wild with each episode, so the visual style actually changes — some episodes look like watercolor paintings, others feel like totally different shows. The soundtrack jumps from funk to lo-fi to rock with zero warning. If you liked Cowboy Bebop but wished it was goofier, or if FLCL's chaotic energy spoke to you, this is in that lineage. It has the same Shinichiro Watanabe fingerprints but leans way harder into absurdity. Underneath all the dumb comedy, though, there are episodes that genuinely hit you with something deeper when you're not expecting it. Thirteen episodes, no real commitment required — each one stands on its own.

Quick Takes

QT finally takes center stage and it is honestly deserved. Dandy and Meow feel like background chaos while QT carries the emotional thread
Dandy being Dandy becomes the actual problem here while QT tries to logic his way through it and Meow just adds noise. Identity chaos but in a funny way
QT feels like the anchor here while Dandy and Meow get pulled into something way more abstract. It leans hard into identity and perception
