Synopsis

When a bumbling history nerd stumbles onto a mysterious artifact that lets them hop between Japan's most iconic historical periods, they keep accidentally messing things up. That's the basic setup of Shin Nippon History, a 2020 comedy TV series that plays fast and loose with Japanese history in the best way possible. Our protagonist bumbles through encounters with famous figures from Japan's past, creating problems they then have to frantically fix before a shadowy group called the Time Preservation Society catches on. Think of it as a comedic time-travel romp where the real tension isn't saving the world, it's trying to put everything back the way it was before anyone notices you broke it. The show has this cool visual thing going on where it blends traditional Japanese art styles with modern animation, which gives each historical period its own distinct look. The soundtrack leans into period-appropriate instruments too, so it actually feels like you're bouncing between eras. The comedy is pretty gentle — more situational humor than slapstick — and you genuinely pick up some Japanese history along the way without it feeling like a lecture. If you liked the historical fish-out-of-water vibes of Thermae Romae or the way Nobunaga Concerto plays with real events, this scratches a similar itch but with a lighter, goofier touch. Fans of Time Travel Girl will also find familiar ground here, though Shin Nippon History leans way harder into the comedy side of things.
