School Rumble
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Completely consumed by her crush on the weird, quiet Oji Karasuma, Tenma Tsukamoto can barely get two words out of him. Kenji Harima, a tough delinquent who looks like he belongs in a biker gang, is hopelessly in love with Tenma. Tenma has no idea. This is basically the engine of School Rumble — a 26-episode TV series from 2004 where nobody can confess their feelings to anyone, and every attempt spirals into increasingly absurd misunderstandings. Harima will go to genuinely unhinged lengths to get Tenma's attention, from disguising himself to picking up bizarre hobbies, and it never works because Tenma is too busy obsessing over Karasuma to notice anything. The cast around them is massive and every single one of them is tangled up in their own unrequited love situation, creating this web of people pining for people who are pining for someone else entirely. The humor leans heavily on slapstick and situational comedy — think the chaotic energy of Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu mixed with the ensemble charm of Azumanga Daioh. There's genuine warmth underneath the gags though, and the show handles its quieter moments well enough that you actually care about these idiots figuring things out. If you liked Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions for the awkward teenage romance angle but want something with a bigger cast and more comedic chaos, this is a good pick. It's comfort food anime with surprisingly sharp comedic timing.
