School Days
Oshimeter
Synopsis
A timid high school student named Makoto Itou has been nursing a crush on a girl from his train commute, Kotonoha Katsura, but he's too shy to do anything about it. So he takes a sneaky photo of her and sets it as his phone wallpaper — because apparently that's a good luck charm for love. His classmate Sekai finds the photo, and instead of teasing him, she decides to play matchmaker and help him get with Kotonoha. There's just one problem: Sekai has feelings for Makoto too. What starts as a pretty standard high school love triangle in this 12-episode TV series slowly turns into something you genuinely don't expect. The tone shifts so gradually that by the time you realize what kind of show you're actually watching, it's too late to look away. School Days earns its reputation not through shock value alone but through a careful unraveling of its characters — their insecurities, their selfishness, their inability to communicate honestly. Every bad decision feels painfully human. If you liked the emotional gut-punches of Kimi ga Nozomu Eien or the way Shuffle! peeled back its lighthearted surface to reveal something messier underneath, this is in that lineage but pushed further. Myself; Yourself fans will also find familiar DNA here. TNK's 2007 adaptation of the visual novel doesn't pull its punches, and the ending is one of those things people in the anime community still talk about nearly two decades later. Just go in knowing that the cute romance setup is not the destination.
