📖 SYNOPSIS
When her uncle murders her father, the king, right before her eyes, Scarlet's attempt at revenge gets her killed instead. She wakes up in the Land of the Dead, a twisted realm where souls who died with unfinished business either complete their purpose or dissolve into nothingness. So now she has to kill her uncle again, except this time the stakes are literally her existence.
What makes this movie interesting is who she meets along the way — Hijiri, a modern-day Japanese nurse who somehow stumbled into this afterlife world. A medieval princess driven by vengeance paired with a healer from contemporary Japan is a character dynamic you don't see often, and the contrast between their worldviews gives the story real weight. This isn't just a revenge quest; it's an introspective look at what vengeance actually costs and whether someone consumed by it can still be saved.
Studio Chizu directed this as an original movie, blending traditional 2D animation with some fresh visual techniques that make the Land of the Dead feel genuinely unsettling. The vibe sits somewhere between Princess Mononoke's mythic grandeur and the darker moral questioning of Fate/Zero, with a touch of Re:Zero's "death has consequences" tension. If you're into dark fantasy that takes its themes seriously and doesn't rush to easy answers, this one's worth your time. It's a single movie, so the commitment is low and the payoff is real.
