Rakuen Shinshoku: Island of the Dead
Oshimeter
Synopsis
When tentacled creatures tear apart a lavish party on a luxury island resort — that's how 'Rakuen Shinshoku: Island of the Dead' opens, and it doesn't slow down from there. This 2-episode OVA from Rabbit Gate drops its cast of survivors into a full-blown horror scenario where some people hide, some fight back, and none of them are prepared for what's crawling through the hotel hallways. Adapted from a visual novel, the story has more structure and character groundwork than you'd typically expect from something this short — the resort setting gives it a claustrophobic, trapped-with-nowhere-to-run tension that actually works. The animation is genuinely well-produced, which makes the horror sequences hit harder than they otherwise would. The tone leans into suspense and dread rather than going purely frantic, so there's a sense of atmosphere here alongside everything else. If you're familiar with classics like Choujin Densetsu Urotsukidouji or Injuu Alien, you'll recognize the horror-driven creature feature DNA this is working with, though Island of the Dead has a more grounded resort-thriller setup as its backbone. Fans of Words Worth who appreciated when these productions actually bother with a setting and stakes will find something worth their time here. It's a short watch, but it uses its runtime with more intention than most entries in the genre tend to.
