Synopsis

Picture a steampunk London split between a Kingdom and a Commonwealth, where five young women are caught right in the middle, working as spies for the Commonwealth side. That's the setup for Princess Principal, and by the time you reach Crown Handler 4, the stakes have gotten genuinely uncomfortable. After a mission goes sideways, Team White Pigeon finds themselves captured by the Kingdom's Home Office and forced into working as double agents. Their leader figure, Princess Charlotte, is separated from the group and placed under the Duke of Normandy's control, while the rest are released but watched constantly. Meanwhile, their own side starts questioning whether they've flipped. So now they're distrusted by everyone and trapped between two powers that would happily dispose of them. The whole thing runs on this steampunk-flavored alternate history that feels lived-in rather than gimmicky, and Yuki Kajiura's jazz-leaning score gives the espionage scenes a weight that really lands. The character dynamics carry a lot here — these aren't just action figures, they're people navigating loyalty, survival, and genuine moral gray areas. If you liked the political chess matches in Code Geass or the spy craft tension of Spy x Family but wanted something darker and more grounded, this fits that niche well. Studio Actas keeps the production quality high for a movie-format release. Just make sure you've watched the original TV series and the first three Crown Handler films before jumping in — this is deep into an ongoing story, and it doesn't hold your hand.
