📖 SYNOPSIS
Small-time streamer Miko Kurono — known online as 'Necronomico' — barely scrapes by while covering hospital bills for her comatose best friend Mayu, who mysteriously collapsed three months ago along with several other popular streamers. When a top-secret VR game beta test offers real money, Miko signs up without thinking twice. After clearing the first level, she and six other streamers meet the Old Ones — as in actual Lovecraftian cosmic deities — and suddenly the game stops feeling like a game.
This 12-episode TV series from Studio Gokumi is a weird and specific mashup: streaming culture meets Cthulhu Mythos inside a death game framework. The animation shifts between traditional 2D and stylized 3D when characters enter the VR space, and the sound design leans into old vinyl static and digital distortion that genuinely gets under your skin. The whole thing has this constant low-level dread where you're never sure what's real and what's the game bleeding over.
If you liked the trapped-in-a-game stakes of Sword Art Online but wanted something way more unsettling, this scratches that itch. There's also shades of Danganronpa: The Animation in how the streamers are forced into increasingly impossible situations with something sinister pulling the strings. And the creeping atmosphere reminds me of Another, just traded out the school setting for cursed VR headsets.
It's a slow burn that rewards patience, and the Lovecraftian elements are handled with more restraint than you'd expect.
