Mr. Osomatsu
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Imagine six identical brothers, all in their twenties, all unemployed, all living at home, and none of them have any intention of changing that. That's the setup for Osomatsu-san, a 25-episode TV series that takes a classic 1960s manga and drags it kicking and screaming into modern Japan. Each of the Matsuno sextuplets has a distinct personality — Osomatsu is the selfish ringleader, Karamatsu tries way too hard to be cool, Choromatsu pretends he has his life together, Ichimatsu is a bitter cat-loving shut-in, Juushimatsu is pure unhinged energy, and Todomatsu is the youngest who's actually kind of socially competent. The show is episodic gag comedy at its core, but what makes it stick is how willing it is to go completely off the rails. One sketch might be a mundane argument about who gets the last rice ball, and the next is a full-blown parody of idol anime or a surreal nightmare sequence. Studio Pierrot leans hard into the absurdity with surprisingly fluid animation for a comedy. If you grew up on stuff like Crayon Shin-chan or KochiKame, this hits a similar nerve — adults behaving terribly, zero consequences, and jokes that land because the characters are so specifically awful. There's also a layer of meta-humor and pop culture references that keeps things unpredictable. It's not trying to tell a grand story. It's six losers being losers, and somehow that never stops being funny.
