Mazinkaiser
Oshimeter
Synopsis
In the very first episode, Kouji Kabuto gets his giant robot stolen. That's not a spoiler — that's the setup, and it happens fast. Mazinkaiser is a 7-episode OVA from 2001 that throws you straight into the deep end: Dr. Hell and his Mechanical Beasts are tearing through Japan, Baron Ashura is running point on the assault, and the Mazinger Team gets handed their first real loss before they can catch their breath. Mazinger Z captured. Great Mazinger wrecked. Humanity looking very exposed. Then Kouji stumbles onto something his grandfather built and kept hidden — a robot called Mazinkaiser, which makes everything that came before look like a warm-up act. The early episodes are about him figuring out how to pilot something that clearly doesn't want to be tamed, while Dr. Hell keeps pushing. The animation holds up well for its age, the mecha fights have real weight to them, and the soundtrack leans hard into the chaos in a way that fits. There's some comedy mixed in too — it doesn't take itself so seriously that it forgets to be fun. If you grew up on Getter Robo or older super robot anime, this feels like a love letter to that era. If you came from Gurren Lagann and want to trace where that energy originally came from, Mazinkaiser is a direct ancestor worth checking out. Seven episodes is nothing — you can finish it in an afternoon.
