Mars of Destruction
Oshimeter
Synopsis
When a Mars probe burns up on reentry, Tokyo finds itself overrun a few months later by creatures that shrug off bullets like they're nothing. That's the setup for Hametsu no Mars, a 2005 OVA from WAO World that throws you straight into a city under siege with almost no breathing room. The monsters, called 'Ancients,' can only be stopped by the MARS suit — a piece of combat armor that only works on people with a very specific genetic profile. Takeru Hinata, a teenager with a complicated past, turns out to be one of those people, and suddenly he's working alongside the AAST, a special police unit built around fighting these things. It's dark and moves fast, leaning into gore and a military-adjacent atmosphere that keeps the tension pretty relentless throughout its single episode runtime. One genuinely odd creative choice: classical music plays over some of the action sequences, which creates this unsettling contrast that either works for you or it really doesn't. If you've seen Elfen Lied and liked how it handled violence and bleak atmosphere, there's some overlap in tone here. Fans of Blue Gender's 'humanity versus something from space' premise will also recognize the feeling. It's not a long commitment — one episode, under an hour — so if you're curious about early-2000s sci-fi horror OVAs that prioritize atmosphere over polish, this is worth an afternoon.
