π SYNOPSIS
On the sun-drenched shores of a seaside city, three girls discover they can transform into magical warriors called Nanas, each with elemental powers tied to a unique weapon. Itaru gets fire channeled through a gauntlet, Asuka wields earth magic with a bow, and Kotone β the quiet one β controls water through an electric guitar. That last detail alone should tell you this isn't your standard magical girl setup.
This is a 7-episode OVA from Shaft, the studio behind Madoka Magica, and while it doesn't go nearly as dark as that show, you can feel their visual fingerprints all over it. The character designs come from Kantoku, whose art style gives the whole thing a softer, more illustrative look than typical anime. What makes it genuinely interesting is that different episodes have different directors, so the tone and style shift as you move through the series β almost like an anthology built around the same cast.
The vibe is more contemplative than action-heavy. It's about adolescence, figuring out who you are, and the quiet weight of growing up, just filtered through magical girl imagery. If you liked the introspective side of Yuki Yuna is a Hero or the character-focused episodes of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, this hits a similar nerve but in a more compact format.
It's short, it's pretty, and it doesn't overstay its welcome. Worth a lazy afternoon if you're into the genre.
