📖 SYNOPSIS

Barely into his early 20s, Reito Naoi just got fired unfairly, tried to steal from his old workplace out of spite, and landed himself in jail. Not exactly a sympathetic hero — until a mysterious lawyer shows up offering him a way out. The catch? He has to become the caretaker of a sacred camphor tree at a remote shrine, on behalf of a relative he barely knows: his late mother's half-sister. What starts as a reluctant deal to avoid prison slowly becomes something else entirely, as the people who visit the shrine each carry their own quiet burdens, and the tree itself seems to hold a significance no one fully explains.

This is a movie that's more interested in stillness than spectacle. It's about a deeply flawed person being placed somewhere he doesn't want to be, surrounded by strangers and silence, and gradually finding something worth holding onto. The director is Tomohiko Itō, who handled Erased and Sword Art Online, so he knows how to build atmosphere and emotional tension without rushing. Character designs come from Tsubasa Yamaguchi of Blue Period fame, which gives everything a grounded, expressive look.

If you liked the gentle supernatural encounters in Natsume's Book of Friends, or the wandering contemplative pace of Mushishi, this hits a similar nerve — personal redemption wrapped in spiritual mystery. It's quiet, it's A-1 Pictures, and it's the kind of story that sits with you after the credits roll.

✨ MUST WATCH IF...

You love Keigo Higashino's novels and want his emotional storytelling in anime form
A-1 Pictures' polished film production style — think high-budget single-episode experience — appeals to you
Stories about flawed protagonists getting unexpected second chances are your thing
You enjoy slow-burn drama built around mystery, moral dilemmas, and human connection

❌ SKIP IF...

You're looking for a full series — this is a single standalone anime film
Action-heavy or fast-paced stories are what you want — Reito's arc is quiet and reflective
You'd rather read the original novel, which likely covers more emotional depth
