📖 SYNOPSIS
On Izu-Oshima, a small island south of Tokyo, Ai Yasumi is the kind of manga fan who probably knows more about her favorite artists than her own classmates. When she finds out that Hoshi no Rei—a manga creator who's been inactive for years—is showing up at COMITIA, she makes the trip to Tokyo to finally see them in person. What happens at the convention sets her on a path she never planned for: actually trying to make manga herself. Which, as it turns out, is a completely different thing from reading it. The series follows Ai as she fumbles through the gap between loving something and learning how to do it, surrounded by characters like her childhood friend Sachi, an art club prodigy named Kokoro, and a Japanese teacher, Rei Teshima, who doesn't sugarcoat anything. The island setting gives it a quieter, more grounded feel compared to most shows about creative work—there's a real sense of distance between Ai's world and the Tokyo manga scene she's trying to break into. If you liked the creative passion in Bakuman or the "kids figuring out how to make art" energy of Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken, this covers similar ground but from the perspective of someone starting from basically zero. It's comedic and warm without being saccharine, and Shin-Ei Animation handling it feels like a good fit for that tone. A nice one to watch when you want something earnest about the messy early stages of chasing what you love.
