Kinuginu no Hanayuki
Oshimeter
Synopsis
When Tokimasa returns to the home of a woman he once abandoned in Heian-era Kyoto, he finds her dead, with a strange floating light hovering nearby. That's the kind of setup that immediately tells you this movie isn't messing around. Convinced he's dealing with a curse, Tokimasa turns to the onmyōji exorcist Kamo no Tadayuki for help, and things spiral from there into supernatural territory rooted in historical Japan. Kinuginu no Hanayuki is a 2025 movie from studio Hand to Mouse, and it does something genuinely interesting — the entire film uses 3D CG animation specifically designed to recreate Heian-period Kyoto with real architectural and cultural detail. The soundtrack by Kawagen layers traditional Heian instruments over modern synths, which gives everything this unsettling, atmospheric quality. There's also a dual-language option where you can watch it with period-accurate Japanese dialogue or a modern dub, which is a cool touch if you're into historical authenticity. The vibe here is slow-burn supernatural horror with a guilt-driven premise. If you liked the eerie, methodical storytelling of Mononoke or the quiet dread of Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales, this hits a similar nerve. Fans of Mushishi's contemplative pace will also find something to appreciate, though this leans darker and more personal. It's one movie, self-contained, and it knows exactly what mood it wants to create.
