Synopsis

In an abandoned city at night, a child plays a secret game of hide-and-seek wearing fox masks — and disappears without a trace. That's the setup, and it gets under your skin almost immediately. Kakurenbo is a 30-minute horror movie from 2004, following a boy named Hikora who enters this forbidden game — called Otokoyo — not for thrills, but because his sister vanished playing it before him. He wants answers. He probably shouldn't be there. Neither should any of them. The ruined industrial cityscape feels genuinely oppressive, all corroded pipes and dead neon signs, and the cel-shaded animation style gives everything this unsettling, slightly-off quality that fits the mood perfectly. It leans into traditional Japanese folklore — fox masks, demons lurking in the dark — so it has that cultural texture that makes the horror feel grounded rather than generic. The soundtrack does a lot of heavy lifting too, quiet and creeping in all the right places. If you've watched Hell Girl or Yami Shibai and liked how those handled dread and folklore-based horror, this sits comfortably in that space. Fans of Bokurano might also appreciate how it uses children in danger to create genuine unease without feeling exploitative. It's short, it's dark, and it doesn't waste a single minute. Good for a late-night watch when you want something atmospheric that doesn't overstay its welcome.
